EPF Interest Rate 2025-26: Current Rate & History

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has set the EPF interest rate at 8.25% for FY 2024-25, which continues to apply in FY 2025-26 until the Central Board of Trustees announces a new rate. This rate is decided annually by the EPFO's Central Board of Trustees and approved by the Ministry of Finance.

Historically, EPF interest rates have ranged from 8.10% to 8.65% over the past decade. The rate was 8.50% in FY 2018-19, dropped to 8.10% in FY 2021-22 (the lowest in four decades), and recovered to 8.15% in FY 2022-23 before rising to the current 8.25%. The interest is calculated monthly but credited to the account at the end of the financial year.

How Much PF Corpus on Rs 30K, 50K, 1L Salary?

How EPF Interest is Calculated

EPF interest is calculated on a monthly running balance basis but credited annually. The EPFO calculates interest at the end of each month on the opening balance of that month plus any contributions received during the month. The formula used is:

Monthly Interest = (Opening Balance + Monthly Contribution) x (Annual Rate / 12)

The monthly interest amounts are accumulated throughout the year and posted to the account at the end of the financial year (March 31). This means the interest credited in March also earns interest from the next financial year onwards, creating a compounding effect. The table above uses a simplified annual compounding model that assumes contributions are spread evenly throughout the year.

Employee vs Employer PF Contribution

Both employee and employer contribute 12% of basic salary, but the employer's 12% is split into two parts: 3.67% goes to the EPF account and 8.33% goes to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS). The EPS contribution is capped at Rs 15,000 basic salary (maximum Rs 1,250/month to EPS).

For employees earning basic salary above Rs 15,000, the employer's contribution to EPS is fixed at Rs 1,250/month, and the remaining amount (employer's 12% minus Rs 1,250) goes to EPF. This means higher-salaried employees get a larger share of employer contribution in their EPF account. The corpus table above includes only the EPF portion (employee 12% + employer 3.67% of basic), not the EPS pension component.

EPF Withdrawal Rules & Taxation

EPF withdrawals are tax-free if you have completed 5 years of continuous service (service across employers counts if PF is transferred). If withdrawn before 5 years, the employer's contribution and interest are taxable as "Income from Salary," and the employee's contribution interest is taxable as "Income from Other Sources."

Partial withdrawals are allowed for specific purposes: up to 90% for house purchase (after 5 years), up to 50% for medical emergencies (no waiting period), 50% for education or marriage (after 7 years), and full withdrawal at retirement (age 58). You can also withdraw 75% of the balance after being unemployed for 1 month and the remaining 25% after 2 months of unemployment.

From FY 2021-22, interest earned on employee contributions exceeding Rs 2.5 lakh per year (Rs 5 lakh for government employees) is taxable. This affects employees with basic salary above approximately Rs 1.73 lakh/month.
