The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed long-term savings scheme introduced by the National Savings Institute of the Ministry of Finance, India, in 1968. It is one of the most popular tax-saving investment options among Indian taxpayers due to its attractive interest rate, sovereign guarantee, and triple-tax-free (EEE) status. PPF accounts can be opened at any post office or authorized bank in India, including SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and most other nationalized and private sector banks.
PPF has a mandatory 15-year lock-in period, with the option to extend in blocks of 5 years after maturity. The minimum annual deposit is Rs 500 and the maximum is Rs 1,50,000. PPF interest is compounded annually and the rate is set by the Government of India each quarter. As of FY 2024-25, the PPF interest rate is 7.1% per annum, which has remained unchanged since April 2020. Over the past decade, PPF rates have ranged from 7.1% to 8.7%.
PPF enjoys EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status, making it one of the most tax-efficient investment options available in India. This means: (1) your annual deposits up to Rs 1.5 lakh qualify for tax deduction under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act; (2) the interest earned each year is completely tax-free; and (3) the maturity amount is fully exempt from income tax. No other fixed-income instrument in India offers this triple tax benefit.
For a taxpayer in the 30% tax bracket investing Rs 1.5 lakh per year, the Section 80C deduction saves approximately Rs 45,000 in taxes annually (Rs 46,800 including cess). Over 15 years, this amounts to Rs 6.75 lakh in cumulative tax savings just from the deduction, in addition to the tax-free interest earned. When comparing PPF with other fixed-income alternatives like bank FDs, the effective post-tax return of PPF is significantly higher. A bank FD at 7.1% would yield an effective return of only 4.97% for someone in the 30% tax bracket, whereas PPF gives the full 7.1% since interest is tax-free.
PPF interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month. This means depositing your annual contribution as a lump sum before April 5th maximizes the interest earned for the entire financial year. If you deposit monthly, ensure payment is made before the 5th of each month to earn interest for that month.
While PPF is an excellent long-term savings tool, it is important to understand how it compares with other Section 80C options to build a well-diversified portfolio:
