What is a Digital Signature and How is it Used?

A digital signature in the context of this tool refers to a handwritten-style signature created on screen using a mouse, stylus, or finger — distinct from a cryptographic digital signature used in security systems. This type of signature is used to add a personal handwritten mark to documents, images, and forms in a digital workflow where a physical signature would traditionally be required or expected.

Digital handwritten signatures are used in a wide range of contexts: signing PDF documents for contracts and agreements, adding a personal touch to digital artwork and illustrations, creating email signature images, signing photographs for distribution, and preparing signatures for embedding in document templates. The key advantage over physical signatures is that a digital signature can be reproduced at any size with consistent quality and applied to documents without physical access to paper.

Creating an Effective Digital Signature

A well-crafted digital signature should be legible, consistent, and appropriately sized. The most important consideration is stroke weight — the thickness of the pen line. Signatures used for document signing should use a stroke weight of 2-3px to produce a natural, pen-like appearance. Thinner strokes can look delicate and refined; thicker strokes look more authoritative and are easier to read at smaller sizes. Very thin strokes (under 1px) may disappear entirely when a signature is scaled down for embedding in a document.

Pen color matters for document signing contexts. Black is the professional standard and works in all document contexts. Blue is the traditional ink color for physical document signing and is often used to distinguish original signatures from photocopies — a blue pen signature on a black-and-white photocopy stands out clearly. Navy blue provides a slightly more formal appearance than bright blue and is commonly used in legal and financial contexts. Avoid red or green for formal documents, as these colors are associated with corrections and approvals respectively.

Practice your signature several times before committing to a final version. A signature drawn with a mouse often looks stiffer than one drawn with a stylus or finger because mouse input lacks pressure sensitivity. The undo function allows you to remove the last stroke without clearing the entire canvas, making it easier to achieve a natural result through iteration.

PNG vs JPG for Signature Export

For the vast majority of use cases, PNG is the correct format for exported signatures. PNG supports alpha channel transparency, which means the signature appears as a floating element with no background — exactly what you need when overlaying a signature on a document or image. A JPEG signature export includes a solid background color (white by default), which creates a visible rectangular box around the signature when placed on any non-white surface.

Use JPG export only when the receiving system does not support PNG or when you specifically want the signature with a solid background. The auto-trim feature crops the exported image tightly around the signature strokes, eliminating empty canvas space and producing a compact result. This is especially useful when you need to embed the signature at a specific size in a document template without awkward white space around it.
